Keir Starmer, the new Labour leader, repeatedly called for the Government to take meaningful action to protect jobs, help people back into work, and ensure local people are well-placed for the high-skilled jobs of the future. But instead of targeted support to protect jobs, the Government has fallen short.
Billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money risks being wasted. Hard pressed sectors have missed out on vital support. Unemployment has climbed to its highest level in a generation. And Britain is amongst those countries faced with the deepest economic damage in the industrialised world from coronavirus.
Keir Starmer is right to have called for action, the warning lights have been on for weeks, it’s time the Government faced up to the scale of the challenge to protect jobs and livelihoods.
Suffolk Coastal’s local economy is so much more than numbers on Whitehall spreadsheets, it’s our jobs, family incomes and high street/town centre. It’s all the things that add meaning and character to the places we love and like to call home. It’s the Government’s duty to help us through and stop unemployment.
