“Under my leadership, Labour will work to earn your trust. I will do my utmost to serve all of our communities and to strive for the good of our country” – Keir Starmer, new leader of the Labour Party.
I want to thank all of the key workers for protecting us and keeping Britain going.
As lockdown restrictions are gradually eased Labour is committed to working to get the right solutions to the problems we face, and voice your concerns to make the case for change where things need to be improved.
But we must not forget the crisis highlighted our chronically underfunded NHS, inadequate social security system, and the lack of protection and support for the self-employed and local businesses.
As we move forward we cannot return to business as normal.
And Britain faces a jobs crisis: we must fight for every job, business and high street. All the signs are that more steps will have to be taken to save jobs and protect incomes. The government was too slow into lockdown, too slow on testing, and too slow to protect jobs.
We need to save jobs, protect incomes and make it safe for everyone to work.
